Prairie State Canoeists
A Northeast Illinois Canoe and Kayak Club
CANCELLED Due to weather conditions
Date: July 15, 2021
Leader: Jim Berg
Location: Lemont Heritage Quarries (Great Lakes Quarries)
Skill Level: Beginner
Category: Day tripDetails: We will meet at the boat ramp of the Great Lakes Quarries, ready to paddle by 5:00 PM. We will circumnavigate the three connected quarries, first clockwise then counterclockwise, taking about 2-2.5 hours. No car shuttle needed. PFD's must be worn.
Join us on a guided tour of the Lemont Quarries, part of the Lemont Heritage Quarries, located about a half mile east of downtown Lemont. The quarries are fairly undeveloped with an abundance of wildlife. Bring a camera.
Shana Wills, Executive Director and Founder of REACH (Refugee Education & Adventure Challenge) will join us. PSC made a financial contribution to REACH earlier this year. This is a chance to meet Shana and learn more about REACH or just enjoy paddling the quarries.
Google "The Forge" and follow their directions to the parking lot of the Lemont Quarries. The Forge is a for-profit adventure park that shares the parking lot with the free Lemont Quarries. Tip: After crossing the railroad track north of Main Street, make an immediate right. After passing a second set of railroad tracks, make a left and an immediate right. Follow the gravel road past the large Consumer Quarry and continue until you see the green porta-potty. The boat ramp is to the left.
